Future of Riqui Puig and Umtiti at Barcelona

Riqui Puig and Samuel Umtiti have been the victims of Koeman’s continuity as the manager. Both Puig and Umtiti were convinced by the start of the season, that they will regain a place in the team this new season. But Ronald Koeman had other ideas. The Central Midfielder and Center Back decided to remain in Barcelona in the summer assuming a new coach is bound to be recruited. But if Ronald Koeman keeps his position as head coach, things won’t look good for the Spaniard and the Frenchman.

Puig only has a playtime of less than 75 mins on pitch this season. He started 4 times last season since his arrival to the club, 2 in LaLiga and 2 in the Copa Del Rey. But he had a total of 24 appearances, including 14 in LaLiga and 4 in the Champions League. He definitely showed potential and talent. He quickly adapted to Barcelona’s style of play and was influential in keeping the ball recycled every time he was on the pitch. Although he couldn’t produce the ultimate best for a 21 year old young midfielder he possessed the quality of a potential future Barca midfielder. However the club as a whole were struggling throughout with another frustrating year leaving Ronald Koeman at stake. So it is not fair to make statements out of Riqui Puig yet. But the reality for Puig is that Nico and Gavi has begun to outshine him. The two midfielders showed solidity and talent from the beginning of the season and Puig has to start work to get back to the top. Puig is determined to succeed at Barca. And many executives believes that he deserves his spot. But if he intends to succeed at Barca, he should be start getting chances to shine. But right now, it seems unlikely if Koeman retains his position for the season. If this is the case, the January window could be his exit. But the supporters around Xavi being head coach and Barcelona’s last redemption, deeply believes that Riqui Puig will be an important figure in bringing Barca back to its lost rhythm.

But Samuel Umtiti’s case is completely different. The world champion who played a major part in France’s 2018 world cup success, unfortunately has been subdued by continous injuries. The Center-Back could not make the comeback performance yet with a lasting impression ever since. He missed out most of the season’s first half due to his knee injury last season and was unable to come back strong for the rest of the season. It is most likely that Umtiti will be leaving Barcelona regardless of what happens with the coach as Barcelona want to reduce their huge wage bill.
