Barcelona Players in France vs Spain 2-1 at UEFA Nations League Final

The UEFA Nations League Finals came to a close as France beat Spain in as 2-1 thriller in Milan, Italy. The San Siro stadium rather witnessed an exciting second half battle between the two European giants.

3 Barcelona players started the Nations League Final and among them was the 17 year old Pablo Gavi, which is only the 2nd international cap of his career. He is proving to be the future and present of Spanish football because he does not play as if it’s just his 2nd international appearance. The midfielder was phenomenal the last two games in keeping the ball and pushing forward, making Spain the more dominant side in the first half of the final.

Sergio Busquets wearing Spain’s arm band last evening, was in a totally different avatar, definitely not as we saw him struggle in Barcelona this season. His captaincy under Luis Enrique was exceptional on the pitch and the midfielder we all once knew was back again in the time that mattered most. Spain was clearly controlling the game the first half with a possession of 67% and a passing accuracy of 87% out of 335. However they couldn’t get much of any threatening balls into the box that could’ve found the back of the net. And neither did France.

France was struggling a bit in the first half to keep upto the pace of the Spanish internationals and Kylian Mbappe despite scorring the winner had an especially poor game. The other Barcelona player for the La Rojas, Eric Garcia had Kylian Mbappe on check out pacing him at times, and Mbappe is considered to be one of the fastest players in the world.

The second half was what we expected when the reigning world champions face off Spain in a major European final. Sergio Busquets set up the Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal for the opening goal of the game in the 64th minute. But it didn’t take even 2 minutes for the in-form Karim Benzema to curl in a beauty past Unai Simon’s fingertips. The game turned into a battlefield as both teams fighting for that winner. But Kylian Mbappe who was playing really weak finally sought redemption in style with his cool finish to place Theo Hernandez’s through ball inside the French goal. The goal had much controversy as Mbappe was clearly offside at the moment the ball leaves Theo’s feet. But the decisive touch from the attempted block of the unlucky Eric Garcia saw the goal count as the winner. In the final few minutes the French captain Hugo Lloris’s heroics stopped Spain from finding their equalizer. But it was a stunning performance from the Spanish to make it a close call against the world champions and Luis Enrique’s side sure is looking really good for their dance in Qatar.
