After grabbing the important 3 points against Getafe at the weekend, FC Barcelona defeated Real Sociedad in a narrow, yet brilliant 1-0 win at the Camp Nou.
Right from the kickoff, the Catalans started their attack, by Ousmane Dembele causing problems for the Sociedad defence from the right flank. The Frenchman used his electric pace and unpredictability to create chances as the game moved on. In the 11th minute of the game, FC Barcelona opened the scoring, when Robert Lewadowski’s deflected shot ended at the back of the net. But the celebrations were cut short as Frenkie De Jong was in an offside position when the ball deflected off his back.
FC Barcelona controlled the game but Real Sociedad had some chances as well. Takefusa Kubo hit the woodwork in the 30th minute to cause some trouble for the Catalans. In the 40th minute, B. Mendez got sent off, after a high tackle on Sergio Busquets which reduced Real Sociedad to 10 men and gave FC Barcelona the upper hand. The scoreline showed 0-0 as the players headed towards the tunnel after the half time whistle.
FC Barcelona created more chances in the 2nd half but lacked the finishing touch until Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute. Jules Kounde released Ousmane through the right flank as the French winger dribbled the ball into the box before unleashing a fierce hit at Alex Remiro’s near post. The Sociedad shot-stopper got his left hand to the ball but it was not enough to stop it from going in.
Soon after falling back, Real Sociedad got a golden chance to equalise, when Takefusa Kubo fed Alexander Sorloth for an easy tap-in. But the Norwegian striker missed the chance which should have caused problems for FC Barcelona.
The game moved on while both teams got more chances to score goals, Marc Andre Ter Stegen performed brilliantly continuing his incredible form this season, as the German shot-stopper kept Real Sociedad at bay. However, in the dying minutes of regular time, a mistake from Ter Stergen gifted the ball to Zubimendi who then fed Navarro to set up a 1 v 1 situation against Ter Stegen. But Stergen made a brilliant save to keep the scoreline as it is.
The game ended 1-0 sending FC Barcelona through to the Copa Del Rey semifinals thanks to some brilliant performances by the players.
At the end of last season, Ousmane Dembele was booed by the Camp Nou after the whole transfer saga and his disappointing performances. But now he is receiving applause and cheers from the Barca fans while Ousmane continues to impress his coach and the fans. The Frenchman is a key part of Xavi’s system and he has delivered in crucial matches this season. The Frenchman once again proved why he is the best winger in the team against Real Sociedad by dropping a masterclass, scoring the only goal of the match and creating many chances.
The defence including Marc Andre Ter Stegen kept a clean sheet against an in-form Real Sociedad team who came to Camp Nou with 9 straight wins. Marc Andre Ter Stegen once again became Barcelona’s saviour in front of the goal by bailing out the team in crucial moments.
Jules Kounde picked up an assist while Araujo and Christensen did their jobs as well. Young Alejandro Balde had some shaky moments but the youngster continued to impress everyone.
The Veteran, Sergio Busquets alongside Pedri, Gavi and Frenkie De Jong controlled the game giving FC Barcelona the upper hand over Sociedad.
After the world cup, this young and talented team with few veterans have given the fans something to be happy about and it is only the beginning.
